Test your online safety knowledge with the Safer Internet Day Quiz!

Calling all young people aged 8-13! Now’s the time to test your online safety knowledge and take our 2019 Safer Internet Day Quiz.

This year’s Safer Internet Day theme is ‘Together for a better internet’ and we are exploring how young people ask for, give and receive consent online. This could be in their friendships or relationships, how they take and share images and videos or how they manage their privacy and data.

From sharing phone numbers to playing games with a high age rating

The questions in the quiz cover a range of scenarios that you might find yourself dealing with online, such as:

  • What you should do if someone asks for your friend’s number online
  • What you should do before signing up for a new game or website
  • What you should do before sharing photos and videos of your friends online.

In the process of taking the quiz you will receive lots of helpful feedback and advice.

Take the Quiz

The Safer Internet Day quiz is designed for 8-13 year olds, but can be played by anyone, and can be used alongside the Education Packs and SID TV films or used on its own. Why not see how everyone in your family does?

Safer Internet Day 2019: Putting the spotlight on online safety in your school

With just one week to go until Safer Internet Day on the 5th February, now is the perfect time to reflect on how your school is promoting online safety.

Online safety is a crucial part of every school’s curriculum, but finding ways to keep key online safety messages fresh and inspiring can be a real challenge. Here are our top tips on how to use Safer Internet Day to promote online safety, alongside some of the amazing ideas we’ve been hearing from the schools already registered as supporters of Safer Internet Day 2019.

Pupil powered online safety

Young people are often incredibly knowledgeable about technology and the online world, so why not use that expertise to your advantage? Peer-to-peer and youth-led activities run by pupils are a fantastic and popular way to spread online safety messages. For Safer Internet Day at St John Bosco RC Primary School the Digital Leaders are conducting a questionnaire of pupils and will present the finding to parents in a session about online safety. At King’s Ely Junior School the Digital Leaders are running a whole school assembly which will encourage safer digital use to all pupils.

Get Parents Involved

Make sure online safety messages are making it home by getting parents involved. You might want to consider holding a session specifically for parents or have activities that children and parents can do together. At Royal Cross School for Deaf Children they will be running online safety activities for the whole school, as well as having workshops for parents. At Eastover Primary School parents and cares have been asked to make a ‘gameplan’ with their children.

Creative activities

Get young people really thinking about online safety, whilst keeping the activities fun and exciting by encouraging them to get creative. At Langold Dyscarr Community School Students will be taking part in a range of creative activities including creating posters and role-playing online safety situations. Manor Court Community Primary School are also running a school wide online safety poster competition.

Use Safer Internet Day to reinforce Online Safety Messages

Safer Internet Day is a great opportunity to really put a spotlight on online safety in your school. But remember, anything you choose to do on the 5th February should form part of ongoing coverage of online safety issues. Make sure pupils understand the importance of staying safe online throughout the whole year by returning to the topic regularly. You could also think about having a dedicated online safety display, a school charter or online safety rules which everyone agrees to follow or an online safety tip of the week in your school newsletter.

Free resources from the UK Safer Internet Centre

For a range of engaging and up-to-date ideas for your class, then the UK Safer Internet Centre have specially designed a selection of free-to-download education packs. These packs are available for ages 3-7s, 7-11s, 11-14s, 14-18s as well as an extra pack with guidance for educators. Each pack includes lesson plans, posters, presentations, quick activities and more. There’s even a pack for parents and carers to do at home! You can also take a look at the SIDTV films produced to complement the Education Packs and focussing on this year’s theme of permission and consent online.

Talk to your child about online safety this Safer Internet Day.

For Safer Internet Day on the 5th February we have created a range of resources for parents and carers this safer internet day, including fun activities, conversation starters, top tips and more.

How parents can get involved in Safer Internet Day:

Safer Internet Day is a fantastic opportunity to reflect as a family on how you can use the internet and technology safely, responsibly and positively. Whether you are a parent, grandparent, foster carer, aunt, uncle or older sibling – we can all play a role in empowering children to enjoy their time online!

This year, the UK Safer Internet Centre is particularly focusing on how consent works in an online context and exploring how young people ask, give, and receive consent online. This could be in their friendships or relationships, how they take and share images and videos or how they manage their privacy and data.

Last year 45% of young people across the UK heard about Safer Internet Day, and as a result of the day 74% of parents and carers across the UK said they talked to their child about using the internet safely. We want Safer Internet Day to have an even bigger impact this year, and we need your help to do this! To help you to get involved in the day we have created a range of activities, top tips and more!

Safer Internet Day top tips

Our top tips for parents and carers give advice and guidance on how to support children and young people online.

These tips are a great way to ensure that parents and carers are supporting their children and giving them the tools to stay safe and positive online. They highlight ways to have a conversation, take a balanced approach and to make use of the tools available.

Read the full list of top tops here

The Parents and Carers Activity Pack

This pack has been created to support your family in having conversations and taking part in activities which will have a positive impact on your online experiences. In the pack you will find: conversation starters, a family internet safety plan, fun family activities, ways to get involved in Safer Internet Day and more!

See the full parent’s Activity Pack here

Watch our Safer Internet Day Videos

In our SID TV film for parents and carers we put young people and their parents head-to-head in a game show and asked them questions about consent online. We wanted to find out if parents and their children have the same or differing opinions on a range of online consent topics.

Watch the full film here

We have also released a new video for parents and carers where young people look at how it makes them feel when something is posted without their consent. The young people talk about the reasons parents may share content online, and how they handle issues around consent online.

Designed to be used in classrooms and homes across the country, SID TV accompanies our Education Packs to allow young people, their teachers and their parents to explore this year’s theme: Our Internet, Our Choice: Understanding Consent in a Digital World.

Read on for a breakdown of the SID TV videos, when to use them and how to get the most out of them this Safer Internet Day.

2. Data Detective

Who is it for? 7 to 11 year olds

Who is it for? Parents and carers
What is it and what is it about? We put young people and their parents head-to-head in a game show to find out how different or how similar their opinions were on a range of online consent topics.
How should I use it? Share the video with parents and carers to support the messages you will be delivering on Safer Internet Day. Together with the Education Pack for Parents and Carers, the video can be used to start conversation at home about online safety, consent, privacy and data sharing.
What are the key messages? Open and honest discussions at home are an important part of responsible use of technology and the internet for young people. By involving parents and carers in Safer Internet Day the messages delivered at schools, libraries, youth clubs and other settings can be discussed and reinforced at home.

Safer Internet Day 2019 Educational resources for Educators

For Safer Internet Day 2019, the UK Safer Internet Centre has created educational resources for use in supporting and educating young people aged 3-18 years old about online issues.

About Safer Internet Day 2019

Safer Internet Day 2019 will be celebrated globally on Tuesday 5th February 2019 with the global slogan of ‘Together for a better internet’.

This theme has been chosen by the Insafe network which is made up of Safer Internet Centres based in every European country. The theme encourages young people to work together to be positive, safe and respectful online.

In the UK the campaign will particularly empower young people to take control of their digital lives and consider how consent works in an online context. It will explore how young people ask, give and receive consent online.  This could be in their friendships or relationships, how they take and share images and videos of how they manage their privacy and data.

Each year to help schools to celebrate Safer Internet Day we create a range of Education Packs which look at the theme in a way that is suitable for children and young people of different ages.

For Safer Internet Day 2018 our Education Packs were downloaded over 800,000 times, with teachers telling us of the positive impact these lessons had on their pupils.

One teacher said:

‘Students felt confident and were given a platform which enabled them to discuss concerns, ask questions and make disclosures.’ – Secondary school teacher, Surrey.

What is in the pack for educators?

The pack for teachers and educators has been designed to support educators in getting the most out of the Education Packs.

The pack includes information about how all the Education Packs can be used within different settings, the ways educators can get involved in Safer Internet Day, as well as advice on handling disclosures about online risks that may come up as a result of the day.

We understand that settings can have different amounts of time available to dedicate to Safer Internet Day, so this pack offers different options for adapting and using all of the Education Packs effectively, whether you have 30 minutes or more than a day to do so.

Staff led presentations

All of the Education Packs for young people contain presentations which can be delivered around the theme of digital consent along with detailed lesson plans, quick activities and wider activities.

Educators can also access Childnet’s staff led presentations which can be used when presenting to staff and parents about online safety messages.

Join hundreds of organisations across the UK

You can link up with the wider campaign taking place across the UK – and globally in over 130 countries – by joining the social media campaign and registering as an official supporter.

Simply complete our registration form to become an official supporter on our website and receive your supporter certificate.

Plus download our template to make your pledges for the Safer Internet Day social media campaign #OurInternetOurChoice.

Safer Internet Day - SID TV 2019 Launched

Each year we create a series of films for Safer Internet Day to engage young people and help start conversations in classrooms across the country. SID TV complements our free Education Packs for schools and can be streamed, downloaded and embedded for use in lessons, on school websites and anywhere else you would like to reach your audience.

The films have been made for children and young people from ages 3 to 18 and aim to enable discussions around the theme of consent in a digital world. A film has also been created to help parents and carers talk about consent online at home.

How to use SID TV in your lessons

If you have pupils aged 3-7, use the our film to start conversations with questions like ‘What do you like to do online?’, ‘What is the internet?’ and ‘What can it do?’ For this age group, we are framing consent around the phrase ‘is it ok to…?’ For example, is it ok to add a stranger to your online game, or share a picture? The aim is to get an understanding of active consent, and when to ask ‘is it ok…?’ They can also learn about how we can ask for consent; verbally, non-verbally, online and offline.

If you have pupils aged 7-11, our film and app continue discussions around the phrase ‘is it ok…?’ What does consent and what does permission look like, both online and offline? This will help young people to understand how the choices we make online can affect people’s feelings and to consider how they act towards others. Pupils can also question issues around big data: ‘What does the internet know about me?’, ‘Where is that information stored?’, ‘Does it matter?’, ‘How does it use the information?’ and ‘Can I revoke consent?’

If you have pupils aged 11-14, show them the music video [BC1] and discuss the effect it has had on your pupils. How were the topic and the messages conveyed through music and spoken word? The film contains key words from the lyrics which will help your pupils start thinking about online consent. You could ask questions like ‘What does consent mean?’ ‘Who owns online content like screenshots and images?’ and ‘What are we allowed to share?’ ‘Is there a difference between active and passive consent?’ ‘What does the internet know about you?’ ‘Where is that information stored?’ ‘Does it matter?’ ‘How is your information used?’

If you have pupils aged 14-18, watch our film for this age group with your class. The young people we spoke to considered some scenarios around sharing information and online consent, and had discussions about their responses. You could use the film to start these conversations in your group or class using the scenarios from the film or extended activities from the Education Pack.  You could also take these discussions further by focusing on how information is used in wider society, with questions like ‘What was the internet created for?’ ‘What is data?’ ‘How do the choices we make online impact on the bigger picture?’ ‘What personal data is the most valuable, the most private or the most unimportant?’ ‘If didn’t share any data at all, what might happen?’

We want Safer Internet Day to empower young people to take control of their online lives. Consent, data and online privacy need not be complex topics to broach. Use these videos along with our other Safer Internet Day educational resources to allow children and young people to consider how consent and data sharing works in an online context.

New guidance for parents and carers looking at screen time

Following research released earlier this year looking at young people’s use of screen time, The Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health (RCPCH) have looked at the effect that screen time can have on the lives of young people, and gave some key questions parents can ask to help them consider their family’s use of screens.

The research asked young people aged 11-24 from across the UK about their views on screen time, it found that:

  • 88% of young people said screen time had a negative impact on their sleep
  • 35% said screen time had a negative impact on their mood
  • On average per day young people spend: 2.5 hours on a tablet or computer, 3 hours on their phone, and 2 hours watching TV

It is important to note that this association between screen time and the above behaviours does not necessarily imply a causative link.

Following the research, the RCPCH has advised that there is no recommended amount of screen time to adhere to, families should negotiate screen time limits with their children based upon the needs of an individual child, the ways in which screens are used and the degree to which use of screens appears to displace (or not) physical and social activities and sleep.

The RCPCH also advises that devices should be avoided in the hour before bed to promote healthy sleep and has provided the following checklist to help parents and carers make decisions about their family’s screen time use:

  • Is your family’s screen time under control?
  • Does screen use interfere with what your family want to do?
  • Does screen use interfere with sleep?
  • Are you able to control snacking during screen time?

Dr Russel Viner, President of the RCPCH commented on screen time, stating:

“One size doesn’t fit all, parents need to think about what’s useful and helpful for their child.

"Parents should consider their own use of screens, if screen time is controlled in their family, and if excessive use is affecting their child’s development and everyday life.”

David Wright, Director of the UK Safer Internet Centre and South West Grid for Learning says:

“The UK Safer Internet Centre welcomes the RCPCH’s review of research into the impact of screen time on the wellbeing of young people. Our mission is to promote the safe and responsible use of technology for young people, which includes balancing the use of technology with other positive activities. The RCPCH’s guide includes useful advice for parents on having conversations with their children, allowing families to establish their own rules and boundaries.”

Screen time resources to help you

At the UKSIC we have created a range of resources to help parents manage their children’s screen time. These include:

  • Screen Time Boundaries Hot Topic
This resource gives top tips for parents and carers about screen time, as well as highlighting advice from experts and research with parents.
  • Young people and screen time - guide for parents and carers
Adapted from the Norwegian media authority by South West Grid for Learning, this resource looks at how parents and carers can help children get off to a good start using digital devices.
  • Family Agreement Template
A family agreement is a great way to start a conversation with your whole family about how you all use the internet and discuss together how to behave in a positive way when online at home, at school or at a friend’s house.

Safer Internet Day 2019 Educational resources for Parents and Carers

For Safer Internet Day 2019, the UK Safer Internet Centre has created educational resources to support and educate young people aged 3-18 years old about online issues. These include resources to support parents and carers and enable them to spread the messages of Safer Internet Day in the home and beyond.

Safer Internet Day Pack for Parents and Carers

The pack for parents and carers has been designed to support the messages young people will be receiving in schools, youth clubs, libraries and wider, the aim of this pack is to allow parents and carers to get involved with Safer Internet Day 2019.

The packs can be sent out to parents and carers to help them understand and support the day or it can be accessed directly by parents and carers who are seeking ways they can get involved and support their child.

This pack is focused on providing parents and carers with practical activities, conversation starters and information to empower them in supporting their child with navigating the issue of consent in a digital age in a safe, responsible and respectful way.

What is included in the pack?

Included within the pack is a set of conversation starters covering the issues of online use, safety, online consent and managing privacy and data. The pack also includes an adaptable family internet safety plan to encourage all families to work together in keeping each other safe online.

The impact of the parents and carers pack

For Safer Internet Day 2018 our Educational packs were downloaded over 800,000 times, and the day reached 30% of UK parents and carers!

Of the parents and carers who heard about the day last year:

  • 74% talked to their child about using the internet safely.
  • 64% said they have a better understanding about how to keep their children safe online.
  • 30% said they spoke to someone about concerns they had about their child on the internet.
