Livestreaming - New Hot Topic for young people

Recently Childnet, partners in the UK Safer Internet Centre, published their livestreaming research which found that over 1 in 10 young people have ‘gone live’.

Livestreaming statistics

Livestreaming services only became widely available in the last year, but since their creation they have been used by a variety of people. Young people livestream to communicate with friends, vloggers and celebrities livestream to communicate with their fans, and some news channels use livestreaming as a way to report breaking news.

Following this research Childnet has created a livestreaming ‘Hot Topic’ which has advice for any young people wanting to watch livestreams or ‘go live’ themselves.

This advice revolves around young people being proactive in keeping themselves safe whilst livestreaming.

Caroline Hurst, Childnet’s Education and Training Manager said.

“Livestreaming is an exciting way for young people to stream their own videos live, and watch others livestream too. Something everyone who livestreams need to be mindful of, is to make sure they aren’t sharing personal information with viewers who are potential strangers online.”

Online hate 'as serious as face-to-face'

Today the Crown Prosecution Service pledges to treat online hate crimes as seriously as those committed face to face.

Today the CPS published new guidance on how it will prosecute hate crime. In recognition of the growth of hate crime perpetrated using social media, the guidance includes a commitment to treat online crime as seriously as offline offences, while taking into account the potential impact on the wider community as well as the victim.

Writing in the Guardian, Alison Saunders, the director of public prosecutions, said

“Whether shouted or tweeted, prejudice devastates lives. That’s why prosecutors are committed to taking internet hate crimes as seriously as face to face ones.”

The CPS is marking the publication of the documents with the launch of a social media campaign - #HateCrimeMatters - to encourage people to come forward and report hate crime incidents.

Young peoples’ experiences of online hate

Last year, the UK Safer Internet Centre published a report into children’s experiences of online hate for Safer Internet Day 2016. This found that the majority of young people had seen something hateful on the internet in the last year.

More than four in five (82%) young people said they had witnessed online hate, having seen or heard offensive, mean or threatening behaviour targeted at or about someone based on their race, religion, disability, gender, sexual orientation or transgender identity.

More worryingly, almost a quarter (24%) reported to have been the target of online hate themselves in the last year because of their race, religion, sexual orientation, disability, gender or transgender identity.

The report also found that 94% of young people believe no one should be targeted with online hate, while 93% have seen their friends posting things online that are supportive, kind or positive about a certain group in the last year, for example, girls, LGBT people, disabled people, or those of a certain race or religion.

To help schools and others encourage young people to report online hate and to champion kindness and respect for all online, the UK Safer Internet Centre published free educational resources and a series of films, which are still available online.

Over 1 in 10 young people have ‘gone live’

Research published today by Childnet, one of three charities in the UK Safer Internet Centre, reveals that livestreaming services launched in the last year by YouTube, Facebook and Instagram are already a significant trend among UK youth.

The survey of 500 children and young people aged 8-17 years conducted by Populus found that YouTube Live is the most popular service for watching others livestream, while Instagram Live is the most popular service that children use to ‘go live’ themselves.

Livestreaming has become increasingly popular in the last year since social media sites such as Facebook, YouTube and Instagram introduced it as a feature, with a range of people using this feature including young people, celebrities and gamers.

In addition to the survey, Childnet Digital Leaders were invited to take part in an online consultation where they shared their experiences of livestreaming, both watching livestreams and going live. 21 Digital Leaders aged 11-18 years participated, sharing their experiences and their advice for their peers.

Watching Livestreaming – from friends to celebrities

The research reveals that watching others livestreaming is far more popular than young people livestreaming themselves, with children watching celebrities, vloggers and gamers, as well as their friends and family.

As one 11 year old girl explained, “I watched my friend do a live stream on Musical.ly at their sleepover”.

YouTube Live is the most popular service for watching others livestream, with 44% of 8-17 year olds using this. Overall teenagers are most likely to watch others livestreaming. Almost half of teens aged 13-17 years have watched livestreams on YouTube (47%), compared to around a third (32%) of 8-12 year olds.

Going Live – connecting with others in a new way

It was found that many children and young people are using livestreaming services to ‘go live’, whether that is sharing their game play or sharing information about their lives with their friends and family.

One 13 year old girl said: “I like livestreaming because I like showing my friends and family what I’m doing throughout the day, and so I can connect with them on a daily basis.”

Instagram Live is the most popular service that children use to ‘go live’ themselves, with 11% of 8-17 year olds saying they had done this on Instagram, with the second most popular service - Facebook Live - being used by 9% of 8-17 year olds.

Staying safe whilst livestreaming

Like many other aspects of being online, livestreaming offers many positive opportunities for young people to connect and engage but there are also potential risks. As livestreaming becomes an emerging feature of young people’s online experiences, it is essential that children are equipped with the skills and knowledge they need to make positive choices when livestreaming.

To empower other children to stay safe, young people who are trained as peer educators through our Childnet Digital Leaders Programme have created top tips for using livestreaming services safely and responsibly. We have also published further advice for young people about this issue.

Will Gardner, CEO of Childnet and a Director in the UK Safer Internet Centre, said:

“Whilst livestreaming has captured headlines, there has been little research conducted into young people’s actual experiences on the various platforms. This research provides important new insights into children and young people’s experiences of this emerging trend. It is clear that there are many positive ways that children are engaging with livestreaming, from sharing their game play with others to interacting with their favourite celebrities. However, there are potential risks and it is essential that we equip children with the skills and confidence they need to use livestreaming services safely, responsibly and positively. We also need to continue listening to children to ensure we understand their needs and concerns in this fast-changing space.”

What is it like being a Childnet Digital Leader?

St Joan of Arc RC Primary School enrolled on to the Childnet Digital Leaders Programme in September 2016. We hear from three Digital Leaders;  James, Lucas and Jarvis, as they look back at their time as part of the programme, giving an insight into what it means to be a Digital Leader.

It was fun being a digital leader because we got to learn how to keep safe online and to help teach other people how to stay safe online. First we had to complete our internet safety training which helped us understand the importance of keeping safe online. After the training was finished we were selected to take part in a photoshoot which would later be used in the BT centre.

In the photoshoot we had to think about how some people share private information online. We took photos of different scenarios of people sharing private information online. We also used different ways of expressing yourself without sharing your true identity. We did this by making our own emoji avatars with our favourite things on them.

The Childnet Digital Leaders Programme is delivered as part of Childnets work in the UK Safer Internet Centre

Guardian Saints announce winner of their Safer Internet Day Competition

The winner of the Guardian Saints Safer Internet Day Competition has been announced.

Skye, one of Family Fostercare West Midlands’ foster children, won the competition by creating the idea for an app to support children who are coming in to care.

The competition required children to complete a survey about online safety, and to supply an idea for a website or app that they felt would be particularly helpful for children in care.

The young people’s ideas were judged by a panel of experts which included; the foster son of one of the founders of Guardian Saints, Steve Pankhurst – Founder of Friends Reunited, Peter Oliver – MD Consumer Commercial Marketing and Digital at BT and Geoff Owen from Research in Practice.

Skye’s winning idea was for a website or app specifically for children coming into care to help them know what to expect, with video content produced by a diverse cross-section of looked after children, acknowledging their place as the only true experts in what it’s like to be a child in care.

Guardian Saints was formed in 2014 by two parents and a foster carer who were becoming increasingly concerned about the dangers the online world was presenting to children.

Government to strengthen UK data protection law

New measures will give people greater control over their personal data, while the Government’s announcement about the age of consent has implications for teens and their social media use.

Last week the Government announced that it is committed to updating and strengthening data protection laws through a new Data Protection Bill.

New measures include:

  • Public to have greater control over personal data - including right to be forgotten
  • New right to require social media platforms to delete information on children and adults when asked
  • Consent will be explicit, so you have to ‘opt in’ – ending the reliance on the use of default opt-out or preselected tick boxes

The Statement of Intent sets out the planned reforms, which will include implementing the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) in full.

Implications for teenagers and their social media use

As Sonia Livingstone explained in her LSE blog, one of the potential implications of new requirements in the GDPR was that children under 16 could be prevented from using social media and other online platforms unless the platform obtained parental consent.

This requirement for parental consent for under-16s marked a change from the commonly applied minimum age of 13, which is a result of US-based companies complying with requirements set out in the Children’s Online Protection Act (COPPA). Indeed, this the reason why many social media services have a minimum age of 13 (see our guide to popular social media services to find out more).

However, a minimum age of 16 wasn’t set in stone and the GDPR did set out the opportunity for each Member State to legislate to have a lower age of consent.

The Government’s announcement this week sets out the UK’s position on this, making it clear that they will legislate to ensure that 13 is the minimum age.  Their Statement of Intent explains how the legislation “will require parents or guardians to give consent to information services where a child is under the age of 13.”

This provides much-needed clarification ahead of the GDPR coming into force in May 2018.

Find out more about the Government’s proposals in their Statement of Intent.

Childnet Digital Leaders share their achievements

The Childnet Digital Leaders Programme is delivered as part of its work in the UK Safer Internet Centre. St Joan of Arc RC Primary School enrolled on to the Childnet Digital Leaders Programme in September 2016. We hear from two of its Digital Leaders, Ciara and Christian, who share their achievements and how they engaged others in their school.

This year was the first year St Joan of Arc introduced Digital Leaders.

The Digital Leaders helped make the school aware of how dangerous the internet can be sometimes. Every few weeks they would meet up and do a training course via the Childnet resources. We enjoyed the training because it was interactive and helped us understand the internet. We also liked the fact that there was a leader-board so you could be competitive.

The Digital Leaders organised a photo competition for the Junior pupils to raise awareness of what you should be posting on the internet. For the Infant children it was a slightly easy competition because you had to make your own emoji that you can use for profile picture if you’re using social media and you don’t want to show your face because that is showing your personal information. We judged them and then in the whole school assembly we presented the prizes.

A few of our other achievements were organising a survey for the school and then the year sixes presented an assembly about what was found. We also got involved in the Safer Internet Day celebrations at the BT centre.

We have had a lot of fun being Digital Leaders and we have learnt lots.

We’d love to hear from you if you are a Digital Leader and would like to share your experiences! Please get in touch with us at leaders@childnet.com

Tech savvy vs tech safe: Sexual abuse in football and how we’re part of the change

The following blog contains content of a sensitve nature and addresses the issue of child sexual abuse and exploitation.

E-Safety expert and coordinator of Game On workshops Andy Woods talks about child sexual abuse in football and how we fight it.

Any situation where a predatory adult has power over a young person is an opportunity for an abuse of that power, and ultimately for abuse of that child. We’ve seen this so heartbreakingly demonstrated within football, and the reporting of historical abuse.

Thanks to bravery of sportsmen and sportswomen who’ve come forward, safeguarding procedures are being examined, re-written and made tougher to support the next generation of young sports professionals. This just didn’t exist 10, 20 or 30 years ago.

The Internet Watch Foundation (IWF), as part of the UK Safer Internet Centre launched Game On – unique educational workshops for young people tackling sexual behaviour in the online world. The issues covered are diverse, and always current, such as sexting and the law, consent and what it means, bullying vs banter, sextortion, pornography, and, child sexual abuse imagery and reporting it.

Adults tend to feel that young people are for the most part tech-savvy, but this does not mean that they are always tech-safe. The messages young people get around online sexual behaviour often comes from their peers, and it is only by challenging this perception of what is ‘normal’ and by asking young people to think more critically about their behaviours that a change in that behaviour can take place. Our programme of workshops helps make us part of that change.

We’re not just educating young people, we’re asking them to step up and become heroes. We know that a young man who has heard of IWF is more likely to make good, positive, online decisions when faced with tricky online sexual situations.

Through education, young people are more likely to report child sexual abuse imagery if they see it online. Their one report can have a lasting and clear effect for the victim who was abused.

We are asking young sportsmen and sportswomen everywhere to hear the call to arms to do the right thing online, and as well as protect others, know how to protect yourself. We’re asking sports clubs nationally to build the best safeguarding practices possible. Our aim is to roll out our workshops to as many clubs as we can. Everton was the first, of what we hope to be many. The final whistle on keeping all children and young people safe at all times has yet to be blown, but in the meantime – GAME ON.

Remember - if you ever stumble across sexual images of children online, you can report anonymously and confidentially to the IWF: iwf.org.uk

Children’s Commissioner launches ‘Digital 5 A Day’ to help keep children’s online lives healthy

This week the Children’s Commissioner for England launched a ‘Digital 5 A Day’ to help keep children’s online lives healthy. It provides a simple framework for families to guide their use of technology to promote children’s wellbeing and help children use technology responsibly, respectfully and creatively.

Taking the NHS’s evidence-based ‘Five steps to better mental wellbeing’ the Digital 5 A Day applies them to online activity.

The 5 A Day advice is:

  1. Connect: Message, have fun and play with friends and family both online and offline.
  2. Be active: Take some time off and get active - movement helps boost emotional wellbeing.
  3. Get creative: Don’t just browse the internet but use digital tools to create content, to build new skills and discover new passions.
  4. Give to others: Be positive online, report bad content and help others to balance their own 5-a-day.
  5. Be mindful: If time online is causing stress or tiredness then take some time off and ask for help when you need it.

Hannah Broadbent, Deputy CEO of Childnet, one of three partners in the UK Safer Internet Centre, comments on the 5 A day guide:

It is essential that we empower children and young people to make the most of the positive opportunities offered by digital technology, while helping them to navigate the risks and pressures they may face online. Cultivating healthy relationships is a crucial part of this, whether that is using technology in a balanced way, or developing healthy relationships with peers based on kindness and respect.

This guide has been developed for parents and children following concerns from parents about the amount of time their children are spending on smartphones, tablets and consoles. Often parents and carers can lack confidence on what their children are doing online, and are unsure about the approach they should take when managing their children’s activity. These concerns are often increased during the school holidays.

The online launch is the beginning of the 5 A Day campaign and over the coming weeks and months the Children’s Commissioner will be developing new resources to give to parents, children and schools, as well as working closely with young creators on YouTube and other social media channels to help reach youth audiences and stimulate debate.

Anne Longfield, the Children’s Commissioner for England, said:

I hope this 5 A day guide will encourage parents and their children to talk about how they can use the internet and technology positively, creatively and mindfully, and that it acts as a basis for family agreements about internet and digital device use throughout the summer holidays and term time.

Jess McBeath, Online Safety Consultant for UKSIC and SWGfL, looks at how online life can expose vulnerable groups to a range of risks, highlighting the importance for professionals to quickly identify and manage them effectively.

I was asked recently to talk to voluntary sector professionals about online risks for vulnerable groups. Immediately I thought of older people at risk of fraud, scams and viruses. Sorted. Then I found out that 41% of over-75s have a social media profile. Hmm. Social media risks for young people are well versed (bullying, mental health, fake news etc). Could these risks also apply to older people? Of course they could. I realised I needed to delve a little deeper.

People at greater risk online

We are all vulnerable at certain times of our lives, depending on our circumstances and life events. When thinking of those more at risk than others, this could include a wide range of people e.g. those with physical disabilities or illnesses, care leavers, people with mental health difficulties, those with addictions, homeless people, abuse survivors, those in poverty, ex-offenders, ex-service personnel, minority groups, etc.

There may be a greater exposure to particular online risks for certain groups, e.g. a third of LGBT people experience online hate crime; and for a number of reasons (including lack of staff awareness and lack of education), young people with learning disabilities are more susceptible than others to online grooming and sexual exploitation.

Evolving technology = evolving risks

Despite the risks, we want to be online. We want all the benefits – the connections, the cost savings, the opportunities, the knowledge, the learning, the entertainment. For anyone with vulnerabilities or additional needs, the internet brings possibilities to combat isolation, join communities of interest, manage medical conditions, access self-help and overcome myriad barriers they may face in the physical world.  For homeless people, internet access via a smartphone can be a lifeline to the world – the key to socialising as well as accessing services.

Our relationship with technology is evolving exponentially. Six years ago, 27% of UK adults had a smartphone. Now it’s 71%.  Half of the online population now use social media as a news source. 1 in 5 relationships begin online. 31 million people play games online. A third of all gambling takes place online. The digital revolution promises to transform lives. And as our digital lives evolve, so the risks evolve.

Take families experiencing domestic violence (for example), where abuse has claimed the online sphere, such as digital stalking and image-based abuse. Responding to these risks is no longer just about ensuring the Council doesn’t blurt out your new address. These days we share data with websites, apps, games and on social media in a way which is difficult to control.

Even with social media privacy settings, images can be found shared to a wider audience. A photograph taken on a smartphone is location-stamped unless this function is disabled (but note that some apps only work if location is enabled for that app e.g. Snapchat filters).  And it’s not just personal data. We share a bit (or a lot) of ourselves online too - our thoughts, feelings and perspectives; our politics; our preferences; our histories; our relationships; our desires.  Some feel they can reveal their ‘true’ selves online. As our physical and online worlds converge, what is the impact on people such as those fleeing abuse, who may try to minimise their digital footprint?

Identifying risk

For those working with people who are more vulnerable to online risks, it can be difficult to know where to begin. A good starting point is identifying the nature and scale of the risk.

Consider the person’s wants and needs, abilities, experiences and influences. They may have particular vulnerabilities that are amplified online. Talk to them about what they enjoy most about the internet, ask them how, where and when they go online, as well as what they do and who they are talking to. If you’re not sure how to raise the subject, you may find our conversation starters helpful.

It’s useful to consider who their peers are online. Do other people in their physical or online environment provide support or pose a risk to them (e.g. over-sharing, abuse or neglect)? Would they know how to recognise and respond to an issue? The same applies to you as a professional, it’s important that you and your organisation know how to respond to an online safety incident.

Responding to risk

There are various steps you can take to help prevent and respond to these risks:

  • Support the person to keep themselves safe online e.g. can you use existing educational materials? Technical settings (blocking, filtering, passwords etc.) may be appropriate. Discuss the kinds of online activities which would be illegal, inappropriate, or break an app’s terms & conditions.  Are they informed about their online rights?  Where would they go for help if they needed it?

  • Look to your own and others’ roles: how can you best support the person to exploit the benefits of the internet whilst managing the risks? How much do you (or someone else in their environment) need to be a positive part of their online experience (within professional boundaries)?  You may find our resources for parents and carers useful.

  • Check your organisation has sufficient risk management policies and processes in place - look for resources specific to your organisation e.g. self-assessmentprofessional guides, toolkits and templates.

Keeping up to date

An important action is to ensure that you are aware of current and future risks. Look at your own and your organisation’s learning needs as well as sources of support.

If you think your organisation needs to undergo training, consider registering for one of our free Online Safety Live briefings which take place across the UK. It may also be worth identifying specialist organisations to follow on social media to keep up to date with the ever-changing online safety landscape.

If you work with vulnerable young people and need help to understand or respond to a specific online safety concern, the Professionals Online Safety Helpline is available to provide support to all members of the children’s workforce.

Professionals Online Safety Helpline update: April - July 2017

We have continued to see a rise in contacts during the second quarter of 2017, with 40% more contacts compared to the same period in 2016.

Abuse of Privacy

Whilst reputation management issues for schools continue to be the most commonly reported issue on the helpline, we have seen a particular increase (78% based on the same reporting period in 2016) in the number of contacts about abuse of privacy. A major factor in this increase is due to intimate images being shared without consent where voyeurism, coercion, extortion and blackmail may be involved. It’s important to clarify here that these would not be considered Revenge Porn cases as the victims are all under the age of 18.

These cases can be anything from content featuring children under the age of 13 posted without parental consent, to more sinister incidences where patterns of behaviour which shame/ humiliate young people and/ or professionals are used to share private information, impersonate or hack individuals (sometimes all three).

Most commonly used social networking sites will remove this type of content if it is reported as it breaches their community standards. However, increasingly complex cases involve several accounts and pieces of content which will have been shared widely, making it difficult for a victim to regain control of the situation. Extreme incidences have involved harvesting and selling on of intimate images, as well as racist video footage of pre-school children made without parental consent.

Sensationalist News

The media coverage around ‘Blue Whale’ continues, and we have seen a range of misinformation from authoritative bodies being circulated widely. Our own position on the matter remains the same and can be read here.

As we know, Keeping Children Safe in Education states that schools have a duty of care to ‘appropriately monitor’ young people’s internet use on their networks, and we believe that this increased focus on monitoring has contributed to a number of calls to the helpline from schools concerned about searches for content around Blue Whale.

If you’re confused about monitoring, you may find our guide to monitoring blog useful. SWGfL has recently developed its own Assisted Monitoring service, which benefits from working closely with the helpline when potential safeguarding concerns arise. You can read more about the service here.

Legislation

With the new Digital Economy Act 2017 on the horizon (expected to be in place by April 2018) we are seeing more calls from educational settings about data compliance and their obligations under GDPR. Earlier this year we produced this blog which explains what schools can do to protect themselves under these new regulations.

SWGfL launched 360 Data in 2016, which is specifically designed to help schools review their policies and procedures around data protection and information security so is a great place to start for professionals working in this area.

Whilst this topic is extremely important, we are hearing of instances where designated safeguarding leads are being given the responsibility of data protection without any extra time to allow for this work. As advocates for the safeguarding of young people, we would advise all members of the children’s workforce that their duty of care to young people remains paramount. Any time spent fulfilling GDPR obligations should not come at the expense of young people’s wellbeing.

Complex Cases

The vast range of online safety issues brought to our attention highlights the need for a collaborative approach to working. We continue to work directly with industry partners to help resolve more complex issues, while involvement from local and national agencies and industry play a crucial part in resolving increasingly complex cases. It’s important now, more than ever, that we continue to work together in the pursuit of keeping everyone safer online.

Cyberbullying - advice for parents and carers

In the latest research by anti-bullying charity Ditch the Label it was found that 69% of young people under 20 have done something abusive to another person online, while 17% of young people have experienced cyberbullying. We give advice for parents and carers concerned about cyberbullying and practical tips for how they can support their child.

Discussing online bullying with your child

It’s important to have regular conversations with your child about the online world, including issues like cyberbullying. This will help you to understand if they have ever experienced or witnessed online bullying for themselves, and give you an opportunity to support them and reassure them that you are always there to help.

Some questions which you could ask your child are:

  • How can you be kind online?
  • What would you do if someone was being unkind online?
  • What do you think cyberbullying is?
  • How is it different to physical bullying?

See our conversation starters for more help starting this conversation.

Developing empathy

We also need to support children in developing empathy and understanding the impact of their online actions. While it might be difficult to think about your child behaving negatively towards someone else, it’s worth bearing in mind that sometimes young people find it hard to identify what bullying is and may just think the behaviour is ‘banter’ and to be expected. It’s important they recognise what behaviour is acceptable and recognise how online actions can affect others. This can begin as soon as children start using technology; our storybook Digiduck’s Big Decision helps even the youngest internet users develop this understanding.

If your child has experienced cyberbullying:

  • Let them talk
Give them the space to share what they want to in their way and listen. Try to avoid the temptation to interrupt because you know what’s going on, prompt if necessary but let them do most of the talking.
  • Don’t be shocked by what they tell you
If there’s one sure way to put a child off seeking help, it’s making them feel embarrassed or ashamed about why they’re asking for help. Times change and some of the things young people do today may make us cringe sometimes, but the inherent behaviour is the same as it was when we were their age.
  • Don’t deny access to technology
When we speak to young people about barriers to getting help they often share that they are worried that their device may be taken away from them. Reassure them that this won’t happen if they speak up about something that has been worrying them online.
  • Encourage them not to retaliate
Although this can seem like the most tempting thing to do in a situation like this it’s very important that you do not retaliate to the cyberbullying. Most of the time the bully is looking for a reaction when they’re teasing or calling someone nasty names. Your child may wish to reply and ask the person to stop sending messages however this is not necessary and action can be taken without replying.
  • Save the evidence
It’s important to keep the cyberbullying messages that a child has received, whether through taking screenshots or saving the messages on the device. Saving the messages allows you to have evidence when reporting the cyberbullying.
  • Talk to their school
Schools play a vital role in the resolution of abusive online behaviours. They have a plethora of effective tools such as the Enable anti-bullying toolkit. They have anti-bullying and behavioural policies in place in order to provide a duty of care to all who attend. As such, they will want to know about any incidences that could potentially affect a child’s wellbeing. Take the evidence of bullying and any additional details about the context of the situation and length of time it has been going on for. It is helpful to discuss this with your child and you may want to speak to the school together.
  • Talk to the police
If you think that your child is in immediate danger don’t hesitate to call the police. Equally, if there is a direct threat of violence or harm within any conversation then you may also wish to contact your local police for support. As parents, any incident involving children will be extremely emotive. There has been a lot of stories about online abuse in the media and the majority of bullying issues can be resolved satisfactorily with support from your child’s school.
